Father to Grisha and Faye, an Eldian who has spent his entire life inside Marley's fenced district. He wears his armband where it can be seen, teaches his children that obedience is what keeps them alive, and asks nothing at all of the world outside.
Obedience Is What Keeps Us Alive
He explains the armband to his children the way other fathers explain weather: this is simply what they are, and behaving well is the whole of the strategy. Eldians who keep their heads down are permitted to live in the district. He has never in his life tested where that permission ends.
The Apology
With Faye's body in the house, he bows to the officer who brought the news and apologises for the trouble his children caused. Then he turns on Grisha, beats him, and demands he apologise too. He is not cruel. He is a man who believes this is how a family survives.
They Welcomed the Other Grandson
In 854 the old couple are still in the internment zone, and the boy who comes home from the war to be fed and fussed over is Zeke — the grandson who kept them alive by handing their son to Public Security. They have had more than twenty years of him, and none at all of the other one.
He Broke Down in Front of a Stranger
At the hospital he falls into conversation with a bandaged veteran who gives the name Kruger and asks about his family. He says he was too hard on his son, that he made him become a doctor, that his daughter died the day the boy took her out beyond the fence — and that it was all his fault. The stranger listening is his other grandson, who says nothing.
Left Behind in the Cell
When Zeke turns out to have been working for the enemy, Marley arrests his grandparents for it. They are still in custody when the ground starts shaking. The men holding them run, and the old man who spent his whole life proving he was no trouble to anybody dies locked in a room, waiting.
