The man who taught Annie to fight, and who trained her as though the whole world were already standing across from her. He allowed no rest and no excuses — and then, on the day she left home, he asked her for one thing only: a promise that she would come back.
The Daughter He Chose
He was moved into the internment zone the day his Eldian blood was discovered, and inside the fence he found an abandoned baby girl put there for the same reason. He took her in and named her Annie. Then he decided what she would be: a Warrior, because a Warrior's family is fed and housed and spoken to like people. The training that followed was for him.
The Training That Never Stopped
He drilled his daughter without pauses and without praise, shouting at her through every session. What he taught her was a whole way of fighting: strike with the legs, never trade blows, and turn the attacker's own weight into the thing that puts him down. Every soldier who is ever surprised by Annie is being surprised by him.
Promise Me You'll Come Back
On the day she left he stopped being her trainer. He told her it was too late to ask for forgiveness, and that even if the entire world ended up hating her, her father would be on her side. He asked for nothing else — only that she promise to come home. Two years later, cornered in Stohess, it is that memory she is holding when the crystal closes over her.
She Promised Me She Would Come Home
At the festival in Liberio he sits in the seats reserved for honorary Marleyans — the reward for a child who never came back. Karina Braun talks beside him about sons and daughters who gave their lives for Marley, and he cuts her off mid-sentence. Annie is not dead. Annie promised. He remains in his seat through the speeches that follow without appearing to hear a word.
The Voice in the Street
The declaration reaches every Subject of Ymir alive, wherever they are standing. He is out doing the shopping when it arrives inside his head: everything beyond the island is to be trampled flat. He drops what he is carrying in the middle of the street and goes down on his knees, in a city that cannot see or hear any of it.
The One Who Refused to Kneel
The Eldians crowd the gate begging to be let out and the guards hear a plot: only Eldians saw the broadcast, so as far as Marley is concerned nothing has happened and these people are trying to escape their camp. The crowd starts giving itself up. He does not. Somewhere in the middle of being detained he remembers what he was promised, and he begins to swing.
He Drove Liberio to Salta
With the guards overrun, he puts a pistol on a Marleyan engineer and the man's family and makes him run a train north, carrying everyone who got out of the zone toward Fort Salta and the airships. They arrive to find the hangars empty and the horizon already steaming. When Karina breaks down beside him he is the one who tries to console her.
The Reunion and the Gas
He helps drag Onyankopon out of the crashed flying boat, unconscious, and asks the man — who cannot answer — whether he knows his daughter. He talks his own people down when Marley's soldiers refuse them medical aid, and gets a hand up from Marley's commander when the two sides finally agree to fight together. Then Annie walks into the fort — and the gas reaches him first.
She Came Home
The power of the Titans ends and the Titans standing in Fort Salta are people again. He finds his daughter in the crowd and holds her, thirteen years after asking her for the one thing she has now done. The reunion lasts seconds before Marleyan rifles order the Eldians to prove they can no longer transform, and he is arguing for a blood test when Armin talks the guns down.
