Profile
The pilot who flies the Scout Regiment home. He came out of a country Marley swallowed and an army that conscripted him, and he is the first person from beyond the sea the island meets who is neither an enemy nor an Eldian.
Conscripted and Turned
Marley took his country and then took him, into the uniform of the army that had done it. Aboard the beached survey ship in 851 he and Yelena disarm their own officers and accept Hange's offer to talk — and the three years that follow are him teaching the island how to build a port, because a country that cannot dock cannot rejoin the world.
We Exist Because We Were Wanted
Islanders who have never seen anyone outside their own three walls ask him about his skin, and he does not take it as an insult. His answer is that the creator wanted a world with many kinds of people in it because that made it more interesting — and that this applies to the Subjects of Ymir too. They exist because somebody wanted them to.
Arrested With the Serums
The Volunteers hand the Garrison a stock of Titan serums stolen out of Marley, the single most valuable thing anyone has ever given the island. Pixis takes delivery and then has every one of them arrested on the spot. Three years of alliance, and the island still will not trust a Marleyan face.
The Pilot Over Liberio
The Scouts do not have aircraft, so the airship that lifts them out of Liberio has somebody else's hands on it. He picks Armin up first, off the water where the harbour used to be, and flies the line of lights laid out over the internment zone with Hange beside him asking whether he is sure he can do this.
He Did Not Know About the Wine
With Marley's airships over Shiganshina he goes down to the cells and opens them himself, because the island needs every soldier it has locked up. Connie goes straight for his throat. He swears he knew nothing about the spiked wine or the euthanasia plan, and argues the only thing he can: that the island still has a future and this is how it keeps one.
The Execution That Did Not Happen
Floch offers the Volunteers a place in the coming Eldian empire as honorary citizens. He turns it down, and is walked out in front of a crowd to be shot for it. What he says from the scaffold is that he came here to free his own country from Marley too, and that they are now doing what Marley did. Pieck's Titan takes him off the platform mid-sentence.
He Flew It on Half a Tank
The flying boat leaves Odiha half fuelled because Hange bought them the time to leave at all and there was no more. He gets it to Eren anyway, holding a course through rock thrown by the Beast Titan until everyone aboard can jump — then refuses to jump himself and takes the aircraft down alone.
The Crates of Baseballs
He is pulled unconscious out of the wreck by a man looking for his daughter, and wakes to find every Eldian in the fort turning into a Titan around him. Three years later he is running relief into the camps the Rumbling left behind, carrying crates of bats and gloves for the children, with Yelena at the other end of them.
