Reiner's mother, an Eldian woman of the Liberio internment zone who has spent her life certain that the fence around her is deserved and that there is a way out of it. She is proud of her son to the point of devotion, and the thing she is proudest of is the thing she talked him into.
The Marleyan She Was Not Allowed to Love
She once had work outside the fence, and outside the fence she met a Marleyan man. Such a union is illegal in Marley, so when Reiner was born she raised him alone inside the zone and told him whose son he was. She never stopped believing the man was waiting for the three of them, and she never stopped wishing aloud that she had been born Marleyan instead.
She Sent Her Son to the Island
The Warrior programme is the one door in the fence: honorary Marleyan status for the family of any child who wins a Titan. She talked her son into it, and she told him what it would buy — citizenship, and a father. On the quay the day the Warriors sailed for Paradis she stood in the cheering crowd, crying, telling him his father wished him well too.
Two Warriors in the Family
Reiner comes home from the war and the family sits down to dinner. Hearing that her niece Gabi may be handed a Titan too, she is overjoyed — two Warriors in one house — and goes straight from there to the people on the island, who should not exist and whom the girl will one day stop. When her son starts to say what those four years were actually like, she talks over him.
The Conversation in the Good Seats
At the festival she meets Annie's father for the first time since her son came back. Mr. Hoover has died, she tells him, peacefully, and proud to the last that Bertholdt gave everything he had to Marley. She is starting to say the same about Annie when Leonhart stops her. She takes her seat and listens to Willy Tybur tell the world that the history she believes is a fabrication.
The Mother at the Fort
On the hijacked train she hears her brother and his wife regret ever letting Gabi near the programme, and thinks of her son. At Fort Salta, watching the airships go up, she notices a woman holding a child and it takes her apart: she raised Reiner for herself. Then she settles for the one comfort left — at least he is safe on the island — and looks up to see him arriving.
She Becomes What She Was Taught to Fear
She watches the fight from the crowd praying her son will live, and collapses when the Colossal Titan closes on him. She is being helped back to her feet when the gas comes over the fort. Every Eldian in Fort Salta turns, Karina among them, and the Titan she becomes charges Reiner. When it ends she is a woman again, and what relieves her most is that her son no longer carries a Titan at all.
