A hundred and seven years ago the Titans came, and humanity was eaten down to almost nothing. What was left of it ran to this ground and threw up three walls — Maria, Rose and Sina, one inside the next — and shut the door on everything outside.

Nobody remembers building them. There is no plan, no account, no mason's name: the Walls were simply here by the time anyone alive could remember, fifty metres of stone that has stood for a century without one course of it ever being laid, replaced or explained. The Order of the Walls calls that proof of a hand larger than ours, and forbids so much as a hole drilled into them.

This is the whole of the history taught in here. Beyond the Walls there is nothing to go back to — no country, no other people, no sea — only Titans and the wreck of a world that ended a century ago. A hundred years of nobody having any reason to doubt it is the only evidence this history has ever needed.
