A hard-faced drill instructor charged with molding the raw recruits of the 104th Cadet Corps, he greets newcomers with a cold appraisal and relentless exercises designed to expose weakness and forge resolve; his stern presence and visible scars make a lasting impression on trainees such as Eren Yeager.
The Man He Found Outside the Walls
Twenty years ago, beyond the Walls, Keith found a survivor who remembered nothing but his own name and his trade. Asked to explain the world, Keith described the Walls honestly: unequal, hard on anyone born without money, and at peace. The stranger — Grisha Yeager — listened, and said the soldiers who rode out anyway were the bravest people he had heard of, because what they wanted was to be free.
The Outsider Who Saved the District
An epidemic tore through the district and Carla was among the sick. The man Keith had brought in from outside saved them all, and the Walls took him in as one of their own. Keith watched a stranger with no past do more good in a season than he had managed in years of expeditions.
Commander in Erwin's Shadow
Keith was named Commander of the Survey Corps and led expedition after expedition beyond the Walls. The soldiers never warmed to him, and the name on everyone's lips was Erwin Smith's. He kept riding out, and kept coming back with nothing that made the deaths mean anything.
What Carla Could Not Understand
Carla married Grisha and had a son. When she told Keith she loved the boy for nothing more than having been born — that he did not need to be special — Keith turned on her: she had never been outside, and could not understand what it cost to achieve anything out there. He was shouting at his own failure, and years later he would repeat her words back to himself.
Brings Eren to His Father
The day Shiganshina fell, Keith found Eren among the survivors and brought him to Grisha. Grisha took the boy away with him, telling him he had to avenge his mother, and the two disappeared toward the forest.
Finds Eren in the Forest
A bolt of lightning came down over the trees and Keith rode toward it. He found Eren alone and unconscious on the forest floor with no sign of his father, and carried the boy back to the shelter where his friends were waiting. He never learned what he had walked in on.
A Mere Bystander
When Eren turned up among his cadets, Keith saw his father's rage in him — a boy who wanted to watch the Walls burn — and tampered with his maneuvering gear to wash him out. Eren passed the test anyway. Keith finally accepted what he had spent his life refusing: he is an ordinary man, not the one the story turns on, a bystander who can change nothing.
The Instructor They Beat
The Yeagerists take the military and set the price of joining: every new recruit must prove loyalty by beating the old instructor, and anyone who will not goes in a cell. Hange tries to stop it. Keith tells them not to bother — these children cannot hurt him — and lets his own trainees put him on the floor.
The Bear Story
Connie opens the cells during Marley's attack and finds his old instructor in one of them, beaten half to pieces. Keith tells them to leave him and get on with it, and offers by way of explanation that he was mauled by a bear.
He Brought His Cadets In
The Walls come down and Shiganshina fills with Titans, and the man who spent thirty years shouting at teenagers rides in with a class of them. He kills two himself, pulls soldiers out from under a Titan, and then uses his own column as bait to drag the horde onto the headquarters where the veterans can kill it.
Two Instructors and a Magazine
He finds Magath alone on the quay trying to blow up a Marleyan cruiser, and stays. Magath refuses to be called a hero because of the uniform he wore; Keith tells him the children they are getting out of here respect him even if he does not respect himself. The two men who spent their lives sending other people's children to die exchange names, and set off the powder.
