Erwin Smith is the commander of the Survey Corps, a leader whose composure and determination have earned the trust of those willing to venture beyond the walls. While many question the value of such dangerous expeditions, he remains committed to seeking a future in which humanity can reclaim what it has lost since the Fall of Shiganshina.
The Question His Father Asked
As a boy, Erwin listens to his father, a village schoolteacher, explain why the history taught inside the walls cannot be true: if the memories of the first people here were altered, then the records the classroom recites were written by whoever raised the walls. He is told to keep the theory secret. He repeats it in front of his classmates instead.
The Accident That Was Not One
The Military Police come for his father soon after, and the boy is told he died in a fall on the road. Erwin grows up knowing that a child's careless question killed the man who answered it. What is left of his father's theory he carries as a debt: only the truth beyond the walls can prove that man was right.
The Formation That Cut the Losses
Under Keith Shadis's command, Erwin serves as a squad leader on expeditions that come home with nothing but casualty lists. His answer is the long-distance enemy scouting formation: a screen of mounted lookouts that spots Titans early enough for the column to steer around them. Losses fall for the first time in years, and the regiment starts looking to him rather than to its commander.
Keith Hands Him the Regiment
Keith Shadis sees his own soldiers place their hope in a subordinate and draws the conclusion himself: the man the Survey Corps will follow beyond the walls is Erwin, not him. He gives up the post, hands over the regiment and takes the instructor's job with the cadets. Erwin accepts a command whose whole purpose is the question that killed his father.
Secures Eren for the Survey Corps
During Eren's Trial, Erwin supports the proposal that Eren Yeager should be placed under the Survey Corps's supervision. After Levi accepts full responsibility for controlling Eren if necessary, Darius Zackly entrusts Eren to the regiment, strengthening Erwin's command with a unique and closely guarded asset.
Recruits New Scouts
Erwin addresses the graduates of the 104th Cadet Corps before they choose their regiments, laying out the brutal truth of service in the Survey Corps without disguising its cost. Under his command it becomes both a military advance and a test of whether the regiment can carry its most valuable asset toward the truth.
Sets a Trap in the Forest
During the 57th Expedition Outside the Walls, Erwin leads the Survey Corps into a large forest and reveals a prepared strategy against the Female Titan. By directing the formation and limiting the information shared beforehand, he turns the expedition into a calculated operation designed to confront an unexpected threat while protecting Eren Yeager. His decisions show a willingness to accept great risks in pursuit of humanity's progress.
Plans the Stohess Operation
After the events of the 57th Expedition Outside the Walls, Erwin prepares a new plan inside human territory with the help of Armin Arlert. Using a carefully constructed deception involving Eren Yeager, the Survey Corps attempts to draw Annie Leonhart into a trap during the Assault on Stohess. The operation reflects Erwin's willingness to take difficult measures when he believes they may bring humanity closer to the truth.
Defends the Cost of Stohess
After the Assault on Stohess, Erwin faces questioning over the destruction caused in Stohess District and the lives placed at risk during the operation. As soon as news reaches him that Eren Yeager has been taken by Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover, Erwin wastes no time organizing a rescue operation. Riding from Trost District along the top of Wall Rose, he gathers mounted forces from multiple regiments and directs them toward the fleeing enemies. His swift response turns a chaotic crisis into a coordinated pursuit focused on bringing Eren back before he can be carried beyond reach.
Risks Himself to Recover Eren
During the pursuit to recover Eren Yeager, Erwin repeatedly chooses to press the attack despite the overwhelming danger posed by the surrounding Pure Titans. He places the mission above his own safety, continuing to direct the operation even after a Titan tears away his right arm. His resolve helps create the opportunity for Eren to break free, allowing the Survey Corps to withdraw with their comrade.
The Answer the Interior Gives Him
During the Uprising, Hange and Levi break the Interior officer Sannes, and Erwin finally puts his own question to the men who guard the crown's secrets. The fall on the road was an execution, ordered so that a schoolteacher's theory would die with him. He takes the answer without raising his voice: the government he serves has been killing the question he means to answer.
Stakes the Regiment on a Coup
With the Survey Corps branded criminal and Eren and Historia in the Interior's hands, Erwin stops trying to work within the government and moves to replace it. During the Uprising he puts the crimes his officers have uncovered in front of Dot Pixis and Darius Zackly, and argues for a change of regime carried out with as little blood as the situation allows.
His Own Trial as the Stage
Brought before the throne room to be condemned for treason, Erwin lets the assembly run its proceedings and answers Aurille's demand for last words while the trap he helped set closes around the chamber. Darius Zackly arrives to arrest the council and the king with it; the execution the nobles had prepared becomes the moment their rule ends.
Commands the Stand at Orvud
Erwin directs the defense of Orvud District against Rod Reiss's Titan with the town evacuated and one arm gone, holding the Survey Corps and the Garrison together on the wall. The plan he commits them all to rests on Eren Yeager hardening his Titan flesh on command — an ability that had failed every test until it appeared on its own in the Reiss cavern, with no guarantee it would answer twice.
Refuses to Be Left Behind
After Historia's coronation, Erwin hands Levi sole authority over the serum recovered from Kenny and turns the regiment toward Shiganshina District. Still recovering and short an arm, he refuses to command from the rear: beyond his duty as commander, the basement waiting in that district holds the answer he has been chasing since his father died for asking the question.
Leads the Return to Shiganshina
Erwin rides at the head of the Survey Corps as it leaves for the operation to retake Wall Maria. The crowds that once cursed the regiment now fill the streets to cheer it on, and Erwin answers by raising his remaining arm before leading the soldiers into the night. He departs knowing the road may end with the basement finally within reach — or with the last strength of the Scouts spent before they arrive.
Entrusts the Search to Armin
Shiganshina is silent when the regiment arrives, and Erwin recognizes that Armin is reading that silence better than any officer present. He gives the young soldier command of the search for Reiner and Bertholdt. Armin finds the warm remains of their camp and the cavity inside the wall, proving Erwin right to place judgment above rank.
Makes the Horses the Battle Line
Once the Beast Titan closes the trap around Shiganshina, Erwin identifies the horses as the regiment's only route home and therefore the enemy's next target. He orders every available squad to protect them, while Hange holds Reiner inside the district and Levi searches for a way to reach the Beast Titan. The battle is divided around the one resource the Scouts cannot afford to lose.
The Final Charge
Erwin abandons the basement he has spent his life pursuing and gives the terrified recruits one last purpose: their deaths will buy Levi a path to the Beast Titan. He rides at the front, calling on his soldiers to advance while stones tear through the formation. A direct hit throws him from his horse and leaves him mortally wounded before the truth he sacrificed everything to reach is finally opened.
Dies Before the Basement Opens
Floch carries Erwin back from the charge still breathing, just as Levi prepares to use the last Titan serum on Armin. Levi brings the syringe to his commander, but Erwin raises his arm in delirium as though he were again the child asking his father about the world outside. Levi lets him rest and gives the serum to Armin. Erwin dies in Shiganshina without ever entering the basement that shaped his life.
