A Marleyan sailor from the first fleet Marley ever sent to look at Paradis, taken prisoner and put to work in a kitchen. He arrived certain the islanders were devils and stayed long enough to cook for them, and the thing that changed his mind was one soldier's face when she tasted the food.
He Screamed for the Guns
In 851 the survey fleet reaches the island and the Attack Titan beaches the ship. Hange offers to talk; Levi puts a blade to a young sailor's throat to encourage it. The sailor is Nicolo, and what he does with the blade at his neck is scream at his own captain to shoot the devils anyway, himself included.
He Cooked and She Ate
Put to work feeding the crews building the island's port, he serves seafood to people who have never seen it, and one of them reacts as though he has done something miraculous. He and Sasha Blouse grow close over three years of it. He will say later that she is the reason he believes a cook's job is to make people happy — that she saved him from the war he was raised into.
He Was Only Their Cook
In 854 he tries to visit her grave and is stopped at the gate by a Military Policeman who does not want a Marleyan in the cemetery; Jean and Connie get him through. At the stone he asks how she died. Jean apologises to him, blaming his own carelessness, and Nicolo does not understand why the apology is being addressed to him — he was only their cook.
The Bottle in the Cellar
Two children corner him in his own wine cellar and tell him they are Warrior candidates from Marley, brought over on the airship from Liberio. He asks whether they killed anybody on the way, and Gabi says yes, proudly. He swings the bottle at her, beats her, and hauls both of them upstairs to the family eating his food in the next room.
The Wine Was the Weapon
Restrained after Artur refuses the knife, he says the one useful thing he knows and refuses to be thanked for it: keep wine out of the boy's mouth. The ships he came on carried far more drink than any crew needed, and Yelena's standing order was that the officers be served first. He has no proof. He has watched Marley take countries this way.
There Is a Devil in Everyone
He carries a rifle through a burning Shiganshina getting the Blouse household to shelter, pulls Artur out from under a Titan, and takes the credit for a kill that was Gabi's so the soldiers will not look at her. Then he listens to two girls competing over which of them is the monster, and tells them the world is like this because there is one in all of us.
