Dressed as Eren
With the Survey Corps branded criminals and the Interior demanding Eren Yeager, Levi's squad turns the handover into a trap, with Jean Kirstein as bait. Wearing Eren's clothes in Trost District, he convinces the approaching men that they are capturing the Titan they came for. The cadet who once chose his posting by its distance from danger now takes the place at which the ambush is aimed.
Unable to Shoot a Human
Posing as a merchant to lure Kenny's Anti-Personnel Control Squad into a trap, Jean Kirstein comes face to face with an armed woman and cannot bring himself to fire. The hesitation costs him a savage beating, and he survives only because Armin Arlert shoots first. The lesson is brutal and permanent: against people, the soldier who waits is the one who dies.
Into the Cavern Beneath the Chapel
Jean Kirstein descends into the cavern beneath the Reiss Chapel with Levi's squad to free Eren and Historia. Underground there is no open sky for maneuvering gear and the enemy fights with firearms, yet Jean pushes through the narrow galleries beside his old classmates without the hesitation that nearly killed him in Trost.
Holding the Line at Orvud
At the Battle of Orvud District, Jean Kirstein takes his position on the wall against Rod Reiss's Titan, a crawling mountain of flesh whose heat alone can kill. He works to place the explosive charges the plan depends on, buying the seconds Eren Yeager needs to seal them inside his hardened Titan flesh.
Riding Out to Shiganshina
With Historia crowned and the old government dismantled, Jean Kirstein rides out with the regiment toward Shiganshina District. The crowds that once jeered the Scouts now cheer them through the streets, and the cadet who had planned a quiet career in the interior leaves for the wall that fell first.
Takes Command Inside Shiganshina
With Hange's squad missing and the Colossal Titan consuming the district in fire, Armin asks Jean to lead while he studies the enemy. Jean pulls the survivors toward the river, keeps them moving under impossible pressure and gives Armin the room needed to understand that every burst of steam is burning away Bertholdt's own body.
Tries to Take the Armored Titan
When Hange prepares to execute the captured Reiner, Jean argues that killing him would waste the Armored Titan. He proposes using the serum to revive a dying Scout and inherit the power, then sends Mikasa to find Levi. The delay gives the Cart Titan enough time to return and carry Reiner away.
The Squad He Took Into Liberio
Four years on he is an officer, and the raid on Liberio is his squad going over a foreign city's rooftops on anti-personnel gear. He spends it arguing with Floch, who points at the Titan eating the stage and says that is what fighting looks like now — and who turns out to have read where all this is going better than he has.
He Blamed Eren to His Face
A twelve-year-old gets aboard the airship and Sasha dies on the floor of it. Jean walks in with the two children who did it, explains how they got on, and then says the part nobody else will: the Scouts were only in that city because Eren went first and made them follow. This one is his.
He Got the Cook Through the Gate
A Military Policeman is blocking a Marleyan prisoner from entering the cemetery. Jean and Connie get him through and walk him to the stone themselves. Then he apologises to Nicolo for his own carelessness, and cannot make sense of the answer he gets — that he has no business apologising to the cook.
Arrested for Rinsing a Boy's Mouth
The wine the officers have been drinking for months turns out to have Zeke's spinal fluid in it. Jean is on the restaurant floor washing it out of Falco's mouth when the Yeagerists come through the door. He tries to tell Floch that this is exactly what an enemy would want, and is taken to a cell in Shiganshina with everyone else.
The Offer Floch Made Him
Floch executes a volunteer in front of him for refusing to kneel, and then makes his pitch: Jean once wanted nothing more than a soft posting in the interior, and the new Eldia can still give him one. Jean says nothing. Standing there saying nothing while it happened is the thing he cannot afterwards get out of his head.
Marco Decided It
Yelena works round the fire until she reaches Marco. Reiner owns it, then keeps going about what carrying it has cost him. Jean has no interest in how bad Reiner feels. He gets up and starts hitting him, and stops only because Gabi steps in front of her cousin and takes it. Then Hange asks whether the buried would want a world drowned for one island, and a boy left on a roof answers for him.
He Reached the Nape
Titans keep growing out of Eren's back faster than anyone can cut them, and Pieck admits she cannot clear a path to the charges she planted. Jean gets there anyway, through a corridor other people die holding open, and blows the nape apart. The boy who joined up to avoid the front line is the one who ends the Rumbling.
The Posting He Never Took
Three years after the Rumbling he sails for Paradis as an ambassador for the countries the Walls walked over, beside Reiner, Annie and Pieck. The cadet who wanted a quiet post in the interior comes home to negotiate with his own island, which has spent those years raising an army and is ready for anyone arriving with anything else in mind.
