The Attack Titan is an intelligent Titan of unusual appearance that first emerges during the Defense of Trost. Unlike the Titans surrounding it, it directs its fury against its own kind, leaving soldiers and commanders struggling to understand whether it is a new threat or an impossible ally.
Named on the Seawall
On the wall where Marley turns Eldian prisoners into Titans, Eren Kruger reveals the power he has hidden inside the uniform of the Public Security Authorities. Before passing it to Grisha Yeager, he names the Titan that has always pushed forward in pursuit of freedom: the Attack Titan.
Inherited in the Woods
Before it ever emerged at Trost, the Attack Titan belonged to Grisha Yeager. On the day Shiganshina fell he passed it to his son in the woods outside the district, along with the Founding Titan he had torn from Frieda Reiss. The Titan the soldiers of Trost could not identify was an inheritance, handed over by a father and forgotten by the boy who received it.
Saves Mikasa
During the Defense of Trost, the Attack Titan intervenes as Mikasa Ackerman is threatened by a Pure Titan. Rather than attacking nearby soldiers, it turns its strength against the Titan, creating the first clear sign that this unknown being may oppose humanity's enemies.
Eren Emerges
After the Attack Titan collapses during the Defense of Trost, Eren Yeager is found alive within its remains. The discovery overturns every assumption about the unknown Titan and leaves nearby soldiers facing an impossible fact: Eren's survival is tied to the being that had fought against the Pure Titans.
Seals the Trost Gate
During the Defense of Trost, the Attack Titan carries a massive boulder to the breached gate of Trost District and blocks the opening. The act turns a desperate gamble into a rare victory for humanity, halting the immediate flow of Pure Titans into the district.
Faces the Female Titan
During the 57th Expedition Outside the Walls, the Attack Titan emerges after Eren Yeager witnesses the defeat of his comrades. Driven by rage, it engages the Female Titan directly, but is ultimately overpowered. After the battle, the Female Titan tears open its body and takes Eren from inside.
Defeats the Female Titan in Stohess
During the Assault on Stohess, the Attack Titan unleashes its full strength against the Female Titan in a destructive battle through the Stohess District. After overpowering its opponent, the Attack Titan hesitates at the final moment when Eren Yeager sees Annie Leonhart inside. Before the confrontation can end, Annie seals herself away, leaving the battle unresolved.
Battle with the Armored Titan
The Attack Titan confronts the Armored Titan in direct combat. After relying on brute force at first, it shifts tactics and applies close-quarters grappling techniques learned by Eren Yeager, managing to overcome the Armored Titan's defenses and gain the upper hand. The battle is abruptly interrupted when the Colossal Titan crashes down from above, completely changing the course of the fight.
Flesh That Will Not Harden
Under Hange Zoë's experiments the Attack Titan is made to transform again and again in search of a single ability: flesh hardened into a shell solid enough to seal the breach in Wall Maria. Every attempt yields shapeless, useless growths that are measured, drawn and filed away, and the power that flattened the Armored Titan proves unable to produce the one thing the regiment needs from it.
The Shell in the Cavern
When Rod Reiss's transformation brought down the cavern beneath the Reiss Chapel, the Attack Titan finally produced what Hange Zoë's experiments never could. It covered the soldiers who had come for Eren, and its flesh hardened into a shell that took the rock and heat in their place. The ability emerged without command when failure meant watching Mikasa, Levi and Historia die beneath it.
The Shell at Orvud
At the Battle of Orvud District the shell has to come on command. The Attack Titan seals the regiment's barrels of gunpowder inside hardened flesh and drives the charge into the mouth of Rod Reiss's Titan, holding it there long enough to blow the giant open. What instinct produced in the cavern is repeated on purpose, and the trait the experiments could not force out of it becomes a weapon.
Seals Shiganshina's Outer Gate
At the start of the operation to retake Wall Maria, the Attack Titan reaches Shiganshina District before the enemy can react. It hardens across the broken outer gate and leaves behind a permanent seal, completing in moments the objective for which the Survey Corps crossed Titan territory.
Draws Reiner Away from the Horses
With the Armored Titan ready to attack the horses — the Survey Corps' only means of escape from Shiganshina — Eren transforms where Reiner can see him. The Attack Titan makes itself the more valuable target and draws Reiner away from the animals, leading him into the position where the Scouts are waiting to unveil their Thunder Spears.
The Hardened Decoy
While the Colossal Titan burns through Armin's attack, the Attack Titan leaves a hardened shell attached to the wall and exits unseen. It circles behind Bertholdt, cuts him from the nape and captures him alive, turning Armin's sacrifice into the victory they planned together.
It Remembers Forwards
Every one of the Nine passes its memories down. This one also passes them back. A holder can receive the memories of the people who will hold it after him, which means the Attack Titan has spent two thousand years being steered by men who were not born yet — and explains what Kruger was really doing when he described a family he could not have met.
It Came Up Under the Stage
A one-legged patient nobody looked at twice spends months inside Liberio, and then the building behind Willy Tybur's stage becomes a Titan. The blast takes the platform, the front rows and most of Marley's high command with it. It is the first time in the story this Titan is the ambush rather than the answer to one.
It Learned to Build
Beheaded, impaled and beaten by a Titan that manufactures its own weapons, it wins by taking the weapon. Once the War Hammer's crystal is crushed in another Titan's jaws, the Attack Titan stops being a body that only breaks things: it can grow spikes, seal a cell behind itself and pin two Titans to the ground at once.
Taken Off at the Neck
A high-calibre round takes its holder's head off in Shiganshina, out of the nape and running across open ground. It does not end him. Decapitation puts a holder of the Nine somewhere else instead: Eren comes to standing and whole on a plain of pale sand, which is exactly where Zeke has been waiting for him.
The Shape It Took at the End
When Ymir gives him everything, what assembles itself out of Shiganshina is not a fifteen-metre body any more. It is a spine and a skull walking on ribs, taller than the Wall it is shaking apart, with the Colossal Titans pouring out from underneath it. The Founder and the Attack Titan are the same creature now, and it is going to walk.
The Nape at the End of It
Two thousand years of holders end in the same place any one of them could have been ended: the nape. Jean blows it apart and Titans keep growing out of the body faster than anyone can cut them. Armin detonates inside it. Mikasa goes in through the mouth with a blade and cuts the head free, and the Titan that spent two thousand years remembering forwards stops.

Eren Kruger
For thirteen years the power sat inside a Marleyan officer of the Public Security Authorities, who used it exactly once — on a wall above the sea, to kill the men he had served alongside. Out of time, Eren Kruger handed it to a prisoner he had kept alive on purpose, and named it for him.
Grisha Yeager
Grisha Yeager crossed into the walls already carrying this power, and used it the night he forced his way into the Reiss chapel. Nobody inside Shiganshina knew the doctor who set their bones could become a Titan; the form only ever appeared far from the people he was hiding it from.
Eren Yeager
In the woods outside Shiganshina, Grisha injected his son and let the transformed boy devour him. Eren walked home with the power and no memory of taking it. It surfaced years later at Trost, where the soldiers who watched it tear into its own kind had no idea they were looking at a comrade.
