    Kenny's account of his own family turns Mikasa's surname into history. The Ackermans were hunted by the crown because they could not be controlled like everyone else, and what was left of them scattered into hiding — which is why her father's family lived alone in the mountains, far from any district.     Mikasa fights her way down into the cavern beneath the Reiss Chapel with Levi's squad to recover Eren. Underground the enemy carries firearms and there is barely any surface for a grapple to hold, and she cuts through the Anti-Personnel Control Squad in exactly the conditions her gear was never meant for, reaching Eren after Historia's refusal has already spared him.

    At the Battle of Orvud District, Mikasa holds the wall with the regiment against Rod Reiss's Titan, a crawling mountain of flesh whose heat alone can kill. The plan depends entirely on Eren hardening his Titan flesh in time, and she takes her position where she can reach him the moment it fails.

    Mikasa finds Armin burned beyond recognition and refuses to surrender the one serum that could save him. When Levi chooses the dying Erwin instead, she turns her blades on her captain and has to be restrained by Hange. She yields only after Hange makes her face what every survivor has already lost; Levi ultimately makes the decision to revive Armin.

    When Hizuru's delegation arrives, Kiyomi Azumabito shows Mikasa a crest she already knows. Mikasa uncovers the same mark on her wrist, passed down by her mother, and learns that she is the last descendant on Paradis of Hizuru's shogun. For the first time, her mother's lost homeland has a name and somebody has crossed the sea looking for her.

    During the Scouts' first day in Marley, Eren asks Mikasa what he is to her. She answers that he is family, and refugees interrupt before either can say more.     The War Hammer Titan has Eren's head off and is asking the boy in the nape whether he has any last words. It never gets an answer: Mikasa comes in behind it and puts eight Thunder Spears into its neck at once. In a war Marley has spent a century preparing for, nobody had planned for an Ackerman.

    Galliard works out what she is halfway through being beaten by her. She knocks Reiner off a rooftop with a Thunder Spear, breaks off only because the Cart Titan arrives, and then reads the Jaw Titan's move on the airship before it makes it and takes both its legs off in the air.

    They Could Not Wake Her

    Jean comes into the room with two children and the news, and she and Armin run out of it. What they find is Sasha on the floor of the airship, and the two of them shaking her and calling her name for a long time after there is any point to it.

    The Worst Case Armin Named

    With Eren acting on his own and nobody able to say what he wants, Armin says the thing out loud: they should be ready for someone to have to kill him. Mikasa argues the timeline — he still has years left — which is an answer about the calendar and not about the question, and everyone in the room notices.

    The Hands on the Table

    At a table in Shiganshina, Eren tells Mikasa that Ackerman blood made him her host and that he has always hated her. When Armin lunges at him, Mikasa pins Armin down before she understands that she has moved. Her horror at her own reflex gives Eren's claim its sharpest proof and leaves her doubting which parts of her devotion were ever hers.

    She Took the Scarf Back

    Louise lies dying with a Thunder Spear fragment inside her and tells Mikasa that Eren ordered the scarf thrown away. Mikasa asks for it back, but does not put it on. She refuses both instructions hidden inside the exchange: Eren does not get to erase what the scarf means, and keeping it does not require her to follow where he is going.

    When Hange asks for help stopping the Rumbling, Mikasa joins immediately. Around the campfire, Annie forces her to face the question she has avoided: whether she can kill Eren if words fail. Mikasa insists they will talk to him first, but agrees not to fight the Warriors before they have that chance.

    The Traitor Who Protected the Azumabito

    When Floch turns his gun on Hizuru's engineers, Mikasa breaks through a window and drives the Yeagerists back. She gets Kiyomi and the mechanics into a basement, keeping alive the only people who can prepare the flying boat. Saving the world now means openly fighting soldiers from her own island, and Floch names her a traitor for it.

    The Harpoon at Odiha

    Floch reaches Odiha clinging to the ship and raises a pistol at the flying boat's fuel tank. Mikasa fires first and puts a harpoon through his throat. His last plea is that they let the Rumbling continue because it is the only future he can see for Paradis; she leaves him behind and boards the aircraft built to stop it.

    The Life by the Cabin

    In the Paths, Eren gives Mikasa the life they might have lived if she had answered differently in Marley: the two of them alone beside a cabin while his remaining years run out. He asks her to forget him and discard the scarf. She answers that she will see him later, then returns to the battle knowing exactly what stopping him will cost.

    She Was the One Who Did It

    Jean blows the nape open and it is not enough, so she goes into the mouth of the Founder herself, cuts Eren's head free and carries it out. Then she kisses it. Every Titan in the world stops in the same instant, and the person who ends the Rumbling is the one who spent her whole life following him.

    The Tree She Buried Him Under

    She takes the head back to the island and buries it under the tree on the hill where he used to sleep, and goes on visiting it. She keeps the scarf. Three years later the ambassadors of a world he tried to flatten are sailing in to talk, and she is still sitting up there with him.
