What are the military branches in Attack on Titan?

The military of Paradis is not one organisation with departments: it is three separate branches, each with its own command, emblem and culture, and a soldier belongs to exactly one. What tells them apart is not rank or weaponry but how far from the outer wall they work.

The Survey Corps rides outside. The Garrison lives on the wall and in the districts touching it. The Military Police serves the interior, beside the capital and the court. That geography doubles as a scale of risk, of comfort and of prestige, and everyone inside the walls reads it without needing it explained.

The series uses that allocation as a character test as much as an organisational chart. After three years of training, each recruit makes a public choice between relative safety, service on the walls and expeditions beyond them.

Nobody joins a branch directly. First come three years in the Cadet Corps, a military boarding school where recruits learn the omni-directional mobility gear and where the class is ranked from top to bottom. The batch Eren, Mikasa and Armin belong to is the 104th, drilled by Keith Shadis.

Training ends with a list. The top ten earn the right to apply to the Military Police: the interior, the capital, a life without titans. Everyone else picks between the wall and the outside. The list is public, and every cadet knows their exact place on it long before the ceremony.

That single mechanism does most of the military's dramatic work, because it rewards the opposite of what humanity needs: it sends the best soldiers to the place with nothing left to fight.

   Hand-to-hand combat, manoeuvre drills with the gear and mock expeditions. A cadet who cannot hold their balance in the harness leaves the military before ever wearing a uniform.

   The class ranking

   At graduation, each class is ordered by performance. Only the first ten may request the Military Police; the rest fall between the Garrison and the Survey Corps.

   The night of the choosing

   The ceremony forces a public choice, right after a commander has spelled out, without decoration, how many people do not come back. It is the one piece of military paperwork the show films like a horror scene.

Up close, the three branches are not three versions of the same job. They carry different missions, different equipment and odds of dying that bear no resemblance to each other, and each attracts a different kind of person.

The first one answers to several names: Survey Corps, Scout Regiment and Scouting Legion are the same unit — the one that rides through the gate.

Above the three branches sits High Command, and at its top Darius Zackly, commander-in-chief. He presides over Eren's trial and can hand custody of a titan to one branch or another: the military settles its gravest disputes internally, with no civilian in the room.

Each branch also has its own commander. Erwin Smith leads the Survey Corps and Hange Zoë inherits the post; Dot Pixis answers for the southern sector of the Garrison; Nile Dok heads the Military Police. The three have known each other for decades, and that detail explains more decisions than any regulation.

Above all of them there is, in theory, a king. A good half of the story's first act consists of finding out what actually occupies that box on the chart.

The arithmetic explains the problem better than any speech. Some 300 soldiers carry everything humanity knows about the outside, while 30,000 watch a wall and 2,000 protect a court. Every expedition returns a fraction of what left, and that fraction is topped up with freshly graduated teenagers.

On top of that, the branch cannot win: its mission is to bring back information, not territory. An expedition can be a resounding success and still come home with carts of corpses and not one conquest to show the taxpayers. The 57th expedition is the canonical example of that impossible accounting.

Which is where the phrase that defines the whole branch comes from — "dedicate your hearts" — along with its political flipside: the contempt the interior reserves for the only people who go outside.

Inside the Military Police sits a unit unlike anything above: the Interior squad. It does not chase criminals, it chases questions. It arrests, interrogates and disappears anyone who gets too close to the origin of the walls or the bloodline behind the throne, and it answers to the Reiss before it answers to the army.

Its commander is Kenny Ackerman, and his presence turns what looked like a comfortable posting into the armed wing of a century-long cover-up. Sannes, one of his men, states the branch's logic most plainly: torture is preferable to letting people remember.

When the Survey Corps decides to dismantle that system, the operation looks nothing like a battle against titans: it is a war between military branches, with soldiers killing soldiers of the same army.

After the fourth season's time skip, the three-branch structure stops describing reality. The threat is no longer outside the wall but across the sea, and the military reorganises around an enemy with artillery, aircraft and a public opinion of its own.

What finally breaks it is not Marley but the Yeagerists. A movement born inside the army itself, with Floch at its head, takes Shiganshina, arrests its own officers and turns the chain of command into a question of personal loyalty to Eren. The uniform stops saying which side its wearer is on.

By the end, the three branches are not dissolved by decree: they are emptied. What survives of the Survey Corps fits around one table, and its last mission is not an expedition but a negotiation.

Seen from the ending, the three-branch split was an exact description of the society that invented it: someone had to go out, someone had to hold up the wall, and someone had to make sure nobody asked why it was there. All three jobs existed so the system would not change.

Once the wall is gone, none of the three means anything any more — and the survivors, whichever emblem they wore, end up doing the same work: explaining to the world what happened inside.
